RAKUB stepped into the world of computers in 1993. During the nineties RAKUB has made some progress in computerization of its accounting, lending and personnel management activities. The bank has been implementing an ambitious long-term perspective plan to be concluded in the year 2010. Adding 51 more branches to the current 357-strong network total number of branches will stand at 408 at that time. It would definitely be a challenging task to run the business in 2010 with only 4,171 employees as approved in 2004-organogram of the Bank. So, a large-scale automation program would be essential to run the Bank in an efficient way despite shortage of manpower.

Perspective ICT Plan: 2007-2011 Need of computerization of activities of a banking institution in today's perspective could hardly be overemphasized. Compared to other banks RAKUB has been lagging far behind in respect of computerization in general and computerization of branch banking in special. The central bank has underscored the need of computerization of banks from time to time. It is expected that in near future online connectivity would also be applicable for central bank's other return/statements too. Besides, the concept of e-government is also coming up. Under the circumstances the Bank has devised an elaborate Perspective ICT (information and communication technology) Plan: 2006-2010 Perspective ICT Plan: 2006-07 through 2010-11 has covered the following issues:

Appropriate Computerization for RAKUBThe bank need not go after any ambitious computerization plan like ERP solution, installing ATM/POS, introducing online banking service etc that entails huge initial investment. Even RAKUB should not follow computerization process of NCBs that they have chosen to handle their robust deposit base. Rather the bank would pursue a modest and cost effective ICT plan. In addition to providing better services to depositors the bank should keep in mind to provide services to more or less 150,000 borrowers who come to the branches two to three times a year to transact crop loans amounting to Tk 12,000 million. Automation of branches by providing mere 2 PCs with necessary peripherals might result in much better turnover of crop loans. The bank can earn additional income of Tk 100 million per year in the way of increased realized interest and service charge by introducing hassle-free, well organized computerized crop lending system.
