Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB) has been implementing a  European Union financed project  entitled "Development of Small holding Tea Cultivation in Northern Bangladesh". Estimated cost of the project amounting  Tk 33.58 million  includes Tk 7.58 million to be borne by Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank for providing credit assistance to farmers.

Prospective borrower should have to be registered with the BTB and approved by the Technical Committee.

Farmers having 1-5 acres of tea farming would be termed as "small growers", above 5 acres up to 20 acres as "small holding" and above 20 acres as "Tea Estate".

In the initial stage the credit program will cover only local farmers of Panchagarh district.

Prospective borrower must use  prescribed form to be obtained from RAKUB branches.

Prospective borrower must have at least one acre of land available for Tea cultivation.

Credit norm has been fixed at Tk 45,344 per acre of which Tk 26,032 would be disbursed in the first year for getting the land ready and growing saplings. Rest would be disbursed in next three years for nursing the plants.

Tk 1 per sapling and thus Tk 14,000 per hectare would be payable to the farmer as subsidy.

BTB would arrange adequate training for the farmers.

Rate of interest would be 10.00 percent per annum. Simple rate would apply for  pre-harvest period of the first four years.

Tea leaves would be marketed with processing plants selected by RAKUB.

Collection of loans would start in the fifth year of disbursement. The farmer will get 50 percent of the sale proceeds of tea leaves in cash while the rest be debited to the farmers loan account with the bank until the bank's dues including  interest be recovered.
